UPA
HRA Pharma is developing three UPA products, one as a treatment of uterine fibroids and two as contraceptives. All three products make use of the same molecule UPA, a new chemical entity which modulates the activity of the progesterone receptor.
UPA UF
UPA UF is a treatment for uterine fibroids, a common benign growth of uterine muscle. The condition affects between 20-50% of women, and is most common in women between the ages of 30 and 40. In most cases, fibroids are asymptomatic, but symptoms can range from heavy vaginal bleeding and pain to incontinence and infertility. In symptomatic cases, fibroids are frequently treated by hysterectomy. The market for uterine fibroids is around USD 1 billion. UPA UF is currently in its second Phase II clinical trial.
UPA Contraception
UPA is being formulated for delivery through a number of novel systems so it can be used as a method of continuous contraception. UPA promises to bring true innovation to the field of contraception, as a locally delivered, non-estrogenic hormone that enables good cycle control. These projects are being pursued in collaboration with the Population Council, a leader in the development of innovative contraceptive technologies.
UPA C-ring
UPA C-ring is a vaginal ring that diffuses UPA locally in a continuous fashion.
UPA C-ring is currently undergoing Phase II clinical trials.
UPA C-IUS
UPA C-IUS is an intrauterine device that diffuses UPA to the uterus for the prevention of pregnancy.
UPA C-IUS will soon enter Phase I clinical trials.
